Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Visits Actua for International Women’s Day

Ottawa, Ontario, March 9, 2020

Today, in celebration of International Women’s Day, the Prime Minister of Canada visited a girls STEM workshop event at Actua’s national headquarters in Ottawa.

“We were honoured to have the Prime Minister visit Actua today, demonstrating the federal government’s support of getting more girls and young women into STEM education and careers,” said Jennifer Flanagan, President and CEO, Actua. “We are continuing to see this government promote women in science, including Canada’s Chief Scientist, Mona Nemer, our Governor General, Julie Payette, and more. This makes a big difference in helping the girls and young women we engage across Canada see themselves in critical STEM leadership roles.”

Over twenty girls from across Ottawa participated in today’s workshop on coding and climate change. Participants took turns explaining to the Prime Minister what they were learning and had the opportunity to ask him questions during a Q&A.

Actua’s network engages over 150,000 girls and young women each year in STEM skills and confidence building programs. Our all-girls programs are led by female instructors, role models and mentors who break down the still existing stereotypes about women in STEM.
