Statement from the CEO: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30, 2025
On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, it is important for the team at Actua to reflect. We are continuing our learning, listening and working to take real action, action that honours Indigenous Knowledge, acknowledges both past and ongoing injustices and helps build a more fair and equitable future.
This day is an essential reminder of our collective responsibility to understand the truths of the past and to work toward reconciliation through ongoing commitment. Central to this responsibility for Actua is recognizing the knowledge embedded in the land, which offers guidance for how we act toward meaningful reconciliation.
For generations, Indigenous Peoples have held deep knowledge about the land, rooted in respect, sustainability and interconnectedness. This is critical to our National Indigenous Youth in STEM (InSTEM) program, engaging more than 40,000 First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth annually, in partnership with over 200 communities. Through this approach, Indigenous youth build skills and confidence while recognizing and celebrating the STEM knowledge that has always existed within their cultures.
By weaving Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Western knowledge systems, we not only strengthen STEM pathways for Indigenous youth but also challenge everyone to reimagine innovation and sustainability.
Land-based learning reminds us that reconciliation must be lived out through relationships with one another and the land. Guided by Indigenous leadership within Actua, our work is carried out in close collaboration with Elders, Indigenous Cultural Practitioners and Knowledge Keepers. Together, we create opportunities for Indigenous youth, from elementary to post-secondary, to thrive in STEM while advancing systemic change.
As we continue this journey, Actua extends its gratitude to them for sharing their teachings with us and our network members who are committed to upholding this work with care and respect.
Beyond the Classroom: Connecting to the Land to Rebuild STEM Education
Reconciliation means action. Actua's National Indigenous Youth in STEM program brings learning to the land, centered around Indigenous Traditional Knowledge. Hear from students and educators about their experiences connecting with the land, creating an inclusive and empowering future for all youth.
