Statement from the CEO: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
September 30, 2024
On the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I’d like to re-share Actua’s dedication to hearing and learning the truth, embracing understanding and committing to reconciliation. Today is one day in a journey that demands action and reflection every day.
For over 30 years, Actua’s mission has been to unlock the infinite potential of youth while relentlessly removing barriers to their participation in STEM. A critical part of this is an organization-wide commitment to reconciliation and applying our learnings for systemic change.
Our National Indigenous Youth in STEM (InSTEM) program, established over 20 years ago, is designed to break down barriers and create pathways for First Nations, Inuit and Métis youth to participate in STEM fields. At Actua, we know that Indigenous people have always known about STEM and we support youth to embrace this as well.
Led by our InSTEM team and in partnership with Elders and Indigenous Cultural Practitioners, Actua provides STEM experiences that build skills and confidence while integrating Indigenous cultural knowledge. Relationships with Inuit, Métis and First Nations people and within Indigenous communities are fundamental to InSTEM and Actua’s reconciliation journey.
To further drive systemic change, we engage others within the education system, including through partnerships with school boards and educators to support inclusive learning environments that respect and elevate Indigenous voices and Ways of Knowing.
We also build partnerships with industry to create learning and networking opportunities for older Indigenous youth, helping them explore career pathways. These engagements not only benefit the youth but also support individuals and organizations in their own reconciliation journeys.
Today, as Actua reaffirms our commitment to reconciliation I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to our dedicated team, partners, network members, and the Indigenous communities and individuals who have generously shared their knowledge and experiences with us.
To further express Actua’s path toward reconciliation, we asked employees to share their personal journeys and how Actua engages them in creating genuine relationships that shape their understanding of reconciliation.
Reconciliation Journeys
Our reconciliation journey is deeply rooted in understanding and a steadfast commitment to systemic change, a dedication we continue to uphold. Hear from our employees about the importance of action and learning.
